So, yes — the water you put into your coffee machine matters.
Across the UK, water hardness varies considerably. Some areas receive relatively soft water, while others receive water containing much higher levels of calcium and magnesium. Those minerals are not necessarily a problem when you drink the water, but they can become a problem when that water is repeatedly heated inside a coffee machine.
The result is limescale.
Left unmanaged, limescale can affect water flow, heating performance, drink consistency and the reliability of the machine. Fortunately, the right water filter and maintenance routine can help keep it under control.

What Is Hard Water?
Hard water contains higher concentrations of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium.
Water picks up these minerals as it moves through rocks and soil. Areas with chalk and limestone geology generally experience harder water, while areas with granite or other less soluble rock formations are more likely to have softer water.
Water hardness is normally expressed as milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre:

The Drinking Water Inspectorate uses the following classifications:

Which Parts of the UK Have Hard Water?
As a broad guide, harder water is common across:
- London and the South East
- East Anglia
- Large parts of southern England
- Areas of the East Midlands
- Parts of Yorkshire and north-east England
Softer water is more common across:
- Much of Scotland
- Wales
- Cornwall and parts of the South West
- North-West England
- Some parts of Northern Ireland
That does not mean every property within those regions receives exactly the same water.
One side of a county may use a different water source from the other. Large businesses with several locations may therefore need different filters or filter settings at different sites.
The safest approach is simple: use the map as a starting point, then confirm the actual hardness at the machine’s location.
Why Does Hard Water Cause Limescale?
Some of the mineral hardness in water is temporary hardness. When the water is heated, calcium compounds can precipitate out of the water and form solid deposits on internal surfaces.
Inside a coffee machine, those deposits can accumulate around:
- Boilers
- Thermoblocks
- Heating elements
- Pipes
- Valves
- Flow meters
- Water outlets
- Steam systems
A small amount of scale rarely announces itself with flashing lights and a formal complaint.
It builds gradually.
Over time, the internal water pathways may narrow, heating surfaces can become coated and components may have to work harder to maintain normal operation. Coffee-equipment manufacturers and cleaning specialists identify scale as a potential cause of blockages, equipment problems and changes in brewing performance.
How Can Limescale Affect a Coffee Machine?
Possible effects include:
Reduced water flow
Scale can restrict narrow pipes, valves and outlets, reducing the amount of water moving through the machine.
Inconsistent heating
A layer of scale can interfere with heat transfer, potentially affecting water temperature and warm-up performance.
Changes to drink consistency
Water flow and temperature both matter when making coffee. If either becomes inconsistent, the drinks may follow.
More maintenance and downtime
A machine that needs to be stripped down and mechanically descaled is considerably less useful than one making coffee.
Component damage
Serious scale accumulation can contribute to blockages and water-system problems. Some manufacturers also exclude water-related damage from warranty cover where the specified water requirements have not been followed.
For a busy office, café, coffee shop, hotel or restaurant, machine downtime is not merely inconvenient. It can interrupt service and cost money.
Does Water Hardness Affect Coffee Taste?
Water is not simply there to carry the coffee into the cup.
Its mineral composition affects how coffee compounds are extracted. Water that is unsuitable for the machine or brewing method can influence flavour, balance and consistency.
Excessively hard water may contribute to harsh or bitter extraction, while water with very little mineral content may also produce disappointing results. Coffee-equipment guidance therefore tends to specify a suitable range rather than suggesting that all minerals should be removed.
The aim is not necessarily to produce completely mineral-free water.
It is to manage the water so that it protects the machine while still allowing the coffee to taste as intended.
What Does a Coffee Machine Water Filter Do?
The exact function depends on the filter.
A suitable coffee machine water filter may help:
- Reduce scale-forming minerals
- Protect boilers and internal water systems
- Reduce chlorine, odours or unwanted tastes
- Improve water consistency
- Support more reliable machine operation
- Reduce the frequency of certain maintenance tasks
- Maintain more consistent coffee quality
Some filters are fitted directly into a machine’s water tank. Others form part of a larger external filtration system connected to a plumbed commercial coffee machine.
The correct option depends on the machine, its water supply and how much water it uses.

Water Filter or Descaler: What Is the Difference?
They perform different jobs.
A water filter helps manage incoming water
A suitable filter treats the water before it travels through the machine. Depending on the filter, this may include reducing scale-forming minerals and other unwanted substances.
A descaler removes existing mineral deposits
Descaler is used to remove limescale that has already formed inside a compatible machine.
A filter is therefore largely preventative. Descaling is corrective maintenance.
Using a filter does not automatically mean that every coffee machine will never need to be descaled. That depends on:
- The filter system
- The machine manufacturer
- Water hardness
- Water consumption
- Filter capacity
- Whether the filter is replaced on time
- Whether the machine has been configured correctly
There are manufacturer-specific exceptions. For example, JURA states that compatible machines using an activated CLARIS filter do not need to be descaled, provided the filter is used and replaced correctly. That rule belongs to the specified JURA system and should not be applied to every coffee machine or filter.
How Do I Find Out My Exact Water Hardness?
There are several ways.
Check your water supplier
Most water companies provide a postcode-based water-quality or water-hardness checker.
Water UK also provides a supplier finder if you are not sure which company supplies the property.
Use a water-hardness test strip
Many automatic coffee machines are supplied with a test strip. Hold it under the water as instructed and compare the result with the scale provided.
The result can then be entered into the machine’s settings where applicable. JURA, for example, includes water-hardness testing and programming instructions within its machine manuals.
Use a professional water test
For commercial espresso machines and higher-volume installations, a more detailed water test may be appropriate.
Hardness is important, but it is not the only relevant measurement. Total dissolved solids, alkalinity, pH, chlorine and chloride levels may also affect machine protection and coffee quality.
Choosing the Right Coffee Machine Replacement Water Filter
Do not choose a filter purely because it looks approximately the right size.
Check:
Machine brand and model
Tank filters are normally designed for particular machine ranges. A JURA CLARIS filter, for example, must match the compatible JURA model and filter generation.
Tank-fed or plumbed-in operation
A tank-fed bean-to-cup machine may use an internal cartridge.
A plumbed commercial machine is more likely to need an external filtration system fitted to the mains-water supply.
Water hardness
The harder the incoming water, the greater the potential scale load placed on the filter.
Daily drink volume
A machine making 20 drinks a day will use considerably less water than one making several hundred.
Steam and hot-water usage
Cafés, coffee shops and hospitality sites using large quantities of steam or hot water may process more water than their coffee count alone suggests.
Filter capacity
Every cartridge has a finite capacity. The practical lifespan may change according to water hardness, flow rate and usage.
Manufacturer requirements
Always check the machine manufacturer’s instructions. The wrong filter, incorrect settings or missed replacement intervals can undermine the protection the filter is supposed to provide.
How Often Should a Coffee Machine Water Filter Be Replaced?
There is no single replacement interval covering every machine and filter.
Replacement depends on:
- The filter model
- Water hardness
- Machine usage
- Cartridge capacity
- Time since installation
- The manufacturer’s instructions
Some automatic coffee machines monitor filter use and display a replacement prompt. External commercial filtration systems may require the operator or engineer to calculate capacity based on local water conditions and site volume.
Do not wait for the water to taste strange or the machine to struggle.
By that stage, the filter may have been exhausted for some time.
Do Homes and Businesses Both Need Water Filters?
Potentially, yes.
At home
A compatible tank filter can help protect a household bean-to-cup machine, particularly in a hard-water area.
In offices
Office coffee machines may make a substantial number of drinks every day. Filter choice should reflect both local hardness and actual usage.
In hotels and serviced accommodation
Sites operating several machines may need a clear replacement schedule so filters are not overlooked across different rooms or departments.
In cafés and coffee shops
Traditional espresso machines use significant volumes of water for brewing, rinsing, steam and hot-water service. Professional water testing and external filtration are generally the more appropriate route.
In restaurants, leisure venues and larger businesses
High-volume machines need filtration sized for the water conditions and expected demand. An undersized cartridge may reach the end of its useful life much sooner than expected.
Signs Your Coffee Machine May Have a Limescale Problem
Possible warning signs include:
- Reduced water flow
- Drinks dispensing more slowly
- Longer heating times
- Inconsistent drink temperature
- Increased noise during heating or pumping
- Steam performance becoming weaker
- Visible white deposits around water outlets
- More frequent descaling prompts
- Water-system or flow errors
These symptoms can have other causes, so do not assume every fault is limescale.
If the machine is behaving differently, check its maintenance history and speak to a coffee-machine engineer or supplier.
A bottle of descaler is useful. It is not a complete diagnostic department.

Water supplies can change, properties may have their own treatment systems and neighbouring buildings can occasionally receive water from different supply zones.
Use the map to understand the likely regional risk. Use an actual water test to choose and configure the filtration system.

- Confirm the machine’s water requirements

Doing this early is considerably easier than dealing with a scaled boiler, restricted valve or machine that has chosen the busiest part of Monday morning to stop cooperating.
