COFFEE BEAN BUYING GUIDE
How to Choose the Right Coffee Beans
There is no single “best” coffee bean. The right choice depends on the drinks you make, how strong you like them and the equipment doing the work.
Smooth and balanced coffee
Choose a smoother, more aromatic blend if you mainly drink black coffee, Americanos or lighter espresso and prefer less roast intensity.
These coffees can also suit offices and homes where several people want something approachable rather than a blend that starts an argument before breakfast.
Rich, classic espresso
Medium and darker Italian-style blends generally provide more roast character, body and intensity.
They suit espresso, longer black coffees and customers looking for the familiar fuller flavour associated with traditional Italian coffee.
Coffee for cappuccino and latte
Milk softens the flavour of espresso, so milk-based drinks often work well with a blend that has enough body and roast character to remain noticeable.
Choose a fuller coffee for cappuccinos, lattes and flat whites rather than expecting a particularly delicate roast to fight its way through a large cup of milk.
Decaf and alternative options
Decaffeinated whole beans allow you to keep using the grinder and normal coffee-making process without relying on instant coffee.
The current range also includes a Kimbo Fairtrade Organic Bio option alongside Kimbo decaffeinated beans.

WHAT’S IN THE BAG?
Arabica, Robusta or a Blend of Both?
Coffee blends use different combinations of beans to create a particular balance of aroma, body, intensity and crema.
Arabica-led coffees are often chosen for their smoother, more aromatic character. Robusta can add body, intensity and a stronger traditional espresso profile.
Neither is automatically “better”. A 100% Arabica coffee may suit someone who prefers a lighter, more refined cup. A carefully balanced Arabica and Robusta blend may work better for strong espresso or milk-based drinks.
The percentage alone does not tell you exactly how the coffee will taste. Roast level, origin, blending and preparation all matter too.
Use the individual product descriptions to compare flavour and strength rather than choosing purely from a number on the front of the bag.

What Are the 'Best' Coffee Beans for Bean-to-Cup Coffee Machines, Barista Espresso Machines & Household Coffee Machines
Bean-to-cup coffee machines
Bean-to-cup machines grind whole beans immediately before preparing the drink.
Choose a reliable, consistent coffee that suits the drinks being selected most often. Offices and shared spaces generally benefit from a balanced blend with broad appeal, while hospitality sites may prefer a stronger house coffee that remains noticeable in milk drinks.
Follow the machine manufacturer’s guidance where it advises against excessively oily beans.
Traditional espresso machines
Traditional espresso machines give the barista more direct control over grind, dose and extraction.
Choose the coffee around the menu. A café or coffee shop serving a high proportion of cappuccinos and lattes may want more body, while an espresso-led menu may suit a smoother or more aromatic blend.
Home coffee machines and grinders
Whole beans can be used with suitable household bean-to-cup machines, espresso machines and separate coffee grinders.
Buying whole beans allows you to adjust the grind for the equipment rather than relying on one pre-ground size for every brewing method.
Filter and manual brewing
Whole coffee beans can also be ground for filter coffee, cafetières and manual brewers.
Use the correct grind setting for the chosen brewing method. Espresso-fine coffee and coarse cafetière coffee are not interchangeable merely because both started in the same bag.

Coffee Beans for Homes, Workplaces & Hospitality
Cafés & Coffee shops
Choose around the menu, house style and proportion of milk-based drinks. Consistency matters because customers expect the same coffee from one visit to the next.
Offices & Workplaces
Shared machines generally need a reliable, approachable coffee that works across espresso, Americano and milk drinks without requiring everyone to become a coffee judge.
Hotels & Restaurants
Consider where the coffee is served: breakfast, bar, restaurant, conference room or self-service area. The same blend may not be the best fit for every outlet.
Household Coffee Machines
Start with the coffee you already enjoy, then move smoother, darker or stronger from there. Buying one bag first is generally more useful than committing to six kilograms based on an adventurous Tuesday afternoon.
How to Store Coffee Beans
Keep unopened bags in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and strong smells.
Once opened:
- Reseal the original bag carefully or use an airtight container
- Keep the beans away from moisture
- Avoid leaving the bag beside a hot coffee machine
- Use older opened stock before starting another bag
- Do not fill a large hopper with more coffee than the site is likely to use reasonably quickly
Buying a larger case does not mean opening every bag at once. The individual sealed bags allow you to work through the case in order while keeping the remaining coffee closed.

Are these beans suitable for bean-to-cup coffee machines?

👉 SHOP COFFEE BEANS HERE
Can I use these beans in a traditional espresso machine?
Yes, provided you also have a suitable coffee grinder. The grind setting and dose must be adjusted for the espresso machine and the coffee being used.
👉 SHOP COFFEE GRINDERS HERE
Can I use whole coffee beans for filter coffee or a cafetière?
Yes...but once they have been ground. Grind the beans to the appropriate size for the brewing method. Filter coffee, cafetière and espresso require different grind settings.
Which coffee beans are best for cappuccino and latte?
A fuller blend with enough body and roast character will usually remain more noticeable once milk is added. Look for products described as suitable for milk-based drinks rather than choosing purely by brand.
ℹ️ Our recommendation? Italian Aroma's 'Cappuccino' Roast available in 1kg bags or 6kg boxes
Which beans are best for black coffee?
That depends on whether you prefer something smooth and aromatic or darker and more intense. Arabica-led and medium-roast coffees often appeal to people looking for a softer black coffee, but taste remains personal.
ℹ️ Our recommendation? Italian Aroma's 'Verona' Roast - available in 1kg bags or 6kg boxes, for a full-bodied espresso
What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta coffee beans?
Arabica is generally associated with a smoother and more aromatic character. Robusta can add body, intensity and a stronger espresso profile. Many Italian-style coffees combine both to create a balanced blend.
Does a higher strength number, or a more intense flavour, mean more caffeine?
Not necessarily. Strength ratings usually describe perceived roast intensity and flavour rather than providing a precise measurement of caffeine.
Do you sell decaffeinated whole coffee beans?
Yes. The current collection includes Kimbo Decaf whole roasted coffee beans in 1kg bags or 6kg cases.
Do you sell organic or Fairtrade coffee beans?
The current range includes Kimbo Fairtrade Organic Bio whole roasted coffee beans.
How many coffees will a 1kg bag of beans make?
It depends on the machine and dose. At approximately 7–9g per single coffee, a 1kg bag provides roughly 100–125 drinks. Double shots and stronger machine settings use more coffee.
Should I buy a 1kg bag or a larger case?
Buy one bag when trying a blend for the first time or where usage is low. Larger cases make more sense once you know the coffee suits the machine, menu and people drinking it.
How should I store coffee beans?
Keep them sealed in a cool, dry place away from heat, sunlight, moisture and strong smells. Once opened, reseal the bag carefully or use a suitable airtight container.
Should coffee beans be stored in the fridge?
No, they're like eggs in that regard. Coffee can absorb moisture and odours, and repeated temperature changes may cause condensation. A cool, dry cupboard is normally more practical.
Do you offer free delivery on coffee beans?
Yes. StafCo’s give free (and fast!) delivery to UK mainland on all orders above £85.
Can businesses order coffee beans regularly and in bulk?
Yes. The collection includes larger cases intended for regular use, and StafCo supplies coffee to workplaces and hospitality customers as well as homes.

Can StafCo help me choose a coffee blend?
